Friday The 13th is undeniably one of the most horrifying films in history characterized with extreme level of violence. Interestingly, this game offers a tamer version of Jason Voorhes. With an animation similar to Blue Wizard’s Slayaway Camp, this game features a cartoonized version of the iconic serial killer. Despite the cuteness of its presentation, the game still adapts the killing concept in a true Jason Voorhees fashion.
Although the title sounds like a hardcore horror adventure, Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle is actually a tricky physics-based puzzle. The game is more than just hunting and killing victims but a puzzle that requires extreme strategy. Basically, the game prompts you in an isometric puzzle which contains irremovable objects, obstacles and of course, the victims. The goal is to kill all the victims within the puzzle in a brutal Jason Voorhes ways.
What really makes the game more challenging are the limited controls. You cannot directly manipulate Jason’s movements and you can only slide him around the puzzle one direction at a time. The only way to stop Jason from moving is to bump him into an item, walls or the victims. To kill victims, you must slide Jason near them. The victims, however, will sometimes run away and move towards obstacles, allowing you to kill them indirectly. If all the victims are killed, the Final Girl or Final Guy will appear and you must kill them to clear the level.
Interestingly, Final victims will take you to a special killing phase, the Kill Zone. In this combat, you’ll see a moving meter. The goal is to tap the screen and hit the Killzone area for a satisfying killing scene to conclude the level. Failing to hit the Killzone, however, will result to a Miss, allowing the victim to escape.
Episodes and Iconic Version of Jason
The game is inspired from all the previous Friday the 13th franchise. It features eight episodes with references from the iconic horror film. The game episodes will give references to the iconic Camp Crystal Lake from the first Friday the 13th film, Manhattan from Jason Takes Manhattan and even in Space as reference to Jason X .
As you unlock an episode, you will also unlock various versions of Jason Voorhees. This includes the classic version from the first film, Supermax Jason, Zombie Jason, Baghead and Uber Jason from Jason X. You can unlock most version through body counts (the game’s currency) while some are through in-app purchase.
What really make the game so special are the cinematic killing scenes. The killing scenes will have many variations depending on the weapon you are using. The 13th level for each episode will always conclude with a dramatic sequence.
Aside from the Main Campaign, you can also play the game in two other game modes. Daily Death takes you to a daily challenge with varying range of difficulties. Completing the daily puzzle gives you a bonus bloodlust while winning 13 Day strikes rewards you with rare weapon. Murder Marathon takes you to the Killzone battle phase. The campaign will run endlessly as long as you keep hitting the right Killzone area. Other noteworthy element in this game is the Bloodlust after each successful level. Filling up the Bloodlust meter gives you a reward which could be in form of skulls or a brand new weapon.
Verdict
Overall, Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle gives enough justice to the franchise that every fan will enjoy. It may not have the amount of terror but the game remains faithful enough by including great amount of movie references. Aside from the visually stunning graphics, the game features challenging and almost frustrating levels that every gamer will enjoy. Good luck!
