Overcooked 2 Review

Overcooked 2 is a cooperative cooking video game that was developed by Team17 and Ghost Town Games. The game was originally released in August 2018, so relatively recently but has it managed to hold its own in today’s world of gaming? Let’s take a look and see.

Gameplay

Overcooked 2 is a game which like its predecessor consists of a very simple premise. You chop the ingredients, cook them for some time and then serve the food to either the customers or the toast invaders. Compared to the original game, Overcooked 2 has more recipes in the cookbook from its previous game and now comes with online functionality. The game proves to be quite challenging and also introduces some new features to the already familiar gameplay mechanics from the original Overcooked. One of the most notable new features that have been introduced to the game is the ability to throw the food around the kitchen. What this accomplishes gives the players time to finish more orders and it makes playing in solo mode feel more immersive and cooperative as you switch between chefs. Although the game is playable by one player, it is much more enjoyable in the cooperative mode and various kitchens now have separated platforms and various new mechanics such as moving floors and rising and falling platforms which makes the throw food function a necessary addition to the player’s arsenal. The levels are very interestingly designed and the game is very fun to play. The game menu has been expanded with new recipes and a new mixing feature has been added which some of the recipes require between chopping and cooking the food. There are more than forty stages in the game and it also features a versus mode which is very competitive.

Graphics

Graphics are definitely a stronger aspect when talking about Overcooked 2. Although they are not highly detailed and out of this world, the simple character designs combined with the cartoonish art style of the game and extremely vibrant colors, really bring the universe that Overcooked 2 is set into life.

Combat and Other Mechanics

When it comes to combat in Overcooked 2, there simply isn’t any of it in this game, at least not in the traditional sense of the word. However, there are numerous different mechanics that will hinder players and they will need to figure out clever ways to overcome them. For example, there will be impassible parts of the map over which players will have to toss food in order to prepare it or the kitchen will catch fire and players will need to find the fire extinguisher and use it to put the fires out before the whole kitchen goes up in flames. Other examples included cars running over players, falling into bottomless pits, or getting pushed around by the NPCs.

The Verdict

Overall, the game looks very good and the level designs are interesting. The game itself is fast-paced and a ton of fun to play. But don’t let the look of the game fool you. Overcooked 2 can get very challenging very quickly and sometimes even frustrating but it is still a lot of fun to play, especially with friends when propper communication and organization are essential for victory.
