Apex Legends Review

Apex Legends is a free to play first-person shooter battle royale game that was developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. The game was released on the 4th of February 2019 on multiple platforms including Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. After its release, Apex Legends was considered to be a worthy competitor to Fortnite Battle Royale which is today arguably considered to be the best game currently available. According to EA, the game had more than 25 million players during its first week and 50 million within the first month after its launch.

Gameplay

Apex Legends follows an already familiar battle royale formula. A large number of players drop from the sky to the desired location with their teammates and after touching the ground. Each team consists of three players and there is a total of 60 players in every match. After landing, the players spread out and try to find as many weapons and other equipment as humanly possible. The playable area of the map shrinks over time and pretty soon players are forced to engage one another in combat. The last team that remains standing wins the match.

Combat

When it comes to combat, Apex Legends truly excels in it. It is fast-paced gunplay with players constantly moving and bullets flying all around. Each player can carry two weapons of their choosing and there are many different ones to choose from. Assault rifles, pistols, and shotguns are just to name a few and each weapon can be upgraded with a larger magazine, a scope, etc. There are also numerous grenades available and each character has their own unique special ability which differs depending on the character role.

While there are many weapons to choose from, there is an issue with them and that is the fact that all of them look too similar to each other to distinguish them at first glance. Although the tutorial provides the player with the ability to choose any weapon and learn how to distinguish them, spending an hour or two in the tutorial and learning how to differentiate weapons is not our idea of fun. Personally, we would prefer that we can distinguish a shotgun from an SMG as soon as we see it. This is not an issue for anyone who has played the game for a while but we felt it is important enough to mention.
The game also features an easy to use ping system which depending on where you are aiming and pinging, provides teammates with various information such as weapons locations, enemy sightings, etc. which makes it very easy to communicate.

Graphics

As far as graphics go, Apex Legends has a futuristic look with beautiful textures and a wide variety of color pallets that fit the game’s universe and environment perfectly.

The Verdict

In conclusion, Apex Legends is a free-to-play fun fast-paced FPS set in the Titanfall universe which is sure to provide you with numerous hours of immersive entertainment if battle royale is your cup of tea. There are optional microtransactions that are purely cosmetic as well as the seasonal battle pass which in all honesty doesn’t offer a lot and in our opinion is not worth buying, but that is an aspect that can easily be improved when next season’s battle pass comes out.
